Guest speaker Colonel Tom Kirk USAF (Ret.) received his commission through the Air Force ROTC at Virginia Military Inst., where he graduated in 1950. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Col. Kirk was an F-105 pilot with a Tactical Fighter Squadron when he led a 24-aircraft strike force near Hanoi in 1967. After placing his own bombs directly on target, he flew his badly damaged, burning aircraft until it was uncontrollable, and was forced to eject over enemy territory. He was immediately captured and spent over 5 years as a POW, some of it in the “Hanoi Hilton” with John McCain.
He has received 4 Silver Stars, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 9 Air Medals, and a Purple Heart. The President of the United States awarded him the Air Force Cross, citing superb airmanship, aggressiveness, and extraordinary heroism. Col. Kirk’s final duty before retiring in 1978 was Vice Commander of All Special forces in Europe.
