Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
Many years ago, when my children were participating in their elementary school field day, several moms would volunteer to help out. My friend Laura and I were watching the events along with one student who had muscular dystrophy and was in a wheelchair. The student did not wear shoes, as he was confined to the wheelchair, and his socks were pure white. I remember Laura saying to me in a whisper, “I will never complain about my kids’ dirty socks ever again because they CAN get them dirty.” I admired her perspective, and that statement has had a great impact on me and my perspective ever since.
We tend to complain, as is the “pattern of this world,” when we have so many chores to do: cleaning fingerprints off surfaces, laundering dirty socks, or cleaning up after pets, to name a few. When we allow God to transform our minds and give us a new way of thinking, we learn to appreciate so much more.
