Practical Wisdom From the Epistle of James

2020 was a difficult year for everyone. It brought on a time of struggle and difficulty for many, along with doubt, trials, and temptations.

It may surprise you to hear that early Christians, those living in the first century, living as a church shortly after Christ’s death, were plagued with similar issues.

Watch live online bible classes or view past classes, as well as learn more about the class, below.

With Rev. Dr. Wayne Wilke

As you will find, in this online biblical class, the apostle James provides followers of Christ with practical tips for faithful living in the midst of such difficulties. James reminds us that God’s Grace is the only thing we, as fallen human beings, can rely on.

He helps us confront the source of our fears and temptations, redirecting our trust to the eternal source of love, the One true God.

This 6-week online bible class offers those who participate online, and in-person, an in-depth study of the epistle of James with Reverend Dr. Wayne Wilkie.

We will be led to examine the epistle of James and focus our discussion on practical insights into living the life of faith through the words of God through James.

Lent 2021 with Pastor Carol Peters

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in The Cost of Discipleship, described the call of Jesus: “Follow Me” as “Costly grace.” Bonhoeffer explained that Jesus’ call is costly because we are called to follow Him – to commit our lives to and obey Him. Jesus’ call of “Costly Grace” is gracious because it is a call to follow Jesus Christ – the One who loves us and gave His life for us.

Jesus gave us certain commands, to “Follow Me” being only one of many, as a computer search on for His commands results in 300 and then some! Some are implied, as in the case of Jesus’ words to the Samaritan woman: “God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Some commands were directed to specific individuals, and not to all of us, e.g. Jesus’ telling His disciples, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat” (John 21:6) to find a large catch of fish.

This year’s Lenten devotional online bible class will study the commands of Jesus, written by Pastor Carol Peters. We will examine what Jesus is asking of us in these commands, as well as what His commands teach us about Him and our Father in Heaven. We will find together that following Jesus’ commands leads us into a deeper relationship with God as well as healthier relationships with our families, friends, and neighbors.

A miner knowing the location of secret gold, and needing to share it’s location with others, must draw a map so that his fellow prospectors can find the secret, to find the gold.  Obviously, those who are searching would follow that map in detail! Jesus’ commands are a map to a gold mine of spiritual treasures! Together this Lent, let’s look at that map and follow the path He has set in this online bible class.

Covenant: Unpacking A Biblical Motif

god's covenants classroom B

The word covenant combines many themes in the bible, both in the Old and New Testaments.

In this online bible class, the concept of covenant is studied as the heart of humankind’s relationship with God. A covenant  provides the context for a deep discussion of what “the People of God,” as an identity, means to us today. Covenant underlies the biblical concept of “love God and serve thy neighbor.” Covenant also furnishes many avenues to explore as we seek to answer the question, “Having been redeemed, how shall we live?”

Participants are encouraged to bring a Bible to class each week!

This online bible class is hosted by Rev. Dr. Wayne Wilke.

During this study, we will discuss together:
  • the meaning and context of covenant in the biblical world and the covenants with Noah and Abraham
  • the covenants at Sinai and with David
  • the prophetic use of covenant by Jeremiah and others and their connection to the Messiah (Micah 6:6; Jeremiah 31:31; Zechariah 7:8-10)
  • living the covenant life -“This cup is the new covenant in my blood…” (Luke 22:20, 1 Cor.11:25); “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27)
  • how covenant connects the question “Having been redeemed, how shall we then live?” with the answer “to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him…” (Romans 12:1)

God and Suffering

Disasters.  Accidents.  Cancer.  COVID-19.

Why does a loving and powerful God allow so much suffering?  What answers does the Bible give us?

What comfort are we given in the midst of suffering?  In this online bible class — taught online by Pastor Carol Peters in weekly 30-minute segments — La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church will look at a few of the Bible’s famous “sufferers” and at what God’s Word teaches us about pain and suffering and our response to it.  We will also draw on insights from other Christians who have struggled with questions of God’s apparent silence and seeming unfairness.
