For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
I love these Bible verses. They are so reassuring and yet at times I forget these words of certainty and fall into the muck and mire. I think from time to time we need to be reminded that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God.”
Music expresses this in ways that reach the heart. The hymn “Blessed Assurance” sums things up – “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine/O what a foretaste of glory divine/Heir of salvation, purchase of God/Born of his spirit, washed in his blood.” Those are pretty fancy words – I don’t think people go around talking like that. Maybe you would sing/say: Jesus stands beside me in all things, happiness and misery, when I was young and as I get old. When I lose faith, He is there, and will continue throughout my life. And in return, the love of Christ, which nobody can begin to understand, will uphold me and sustain me, no matter what. Now, if only I could put those words into a cool song!
Dear Lord, thank you for your faith in me. I shall work on being worthy of the gift of your love and faith in me. And I will sing loud and proud – Blessed Assurance! Amen
