Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Daniel 1:16-18 (NIV)
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s giant, 90-foot idol. Because they refused, he threatened to throw them into a fiery furnace. But the three men refused to lose their peace. They knew that God could rescue them. And if he didn’t, so be it.
Warren Wiersbe wrote, “We are prone to want God to change our circumstances, but He wants to change our character. We often think that peace comes from the outside in, but it comes from the inside out.”
Right now, circumstances for many people are tough. We need to not let our fears and anxieties get the best of us. We need to keep our faith and peace. We need to remember that if we must walk through the fire, Christ is there with us. (See Daniel 3:25-29). God did rescue Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and He can do the same of us.
