God's Covenants Sunday Morning Classes

Covenant: Unpacking A Biblical Motif

In person with Rev. Dr.  Wayne Wilke

The term covenant binds together many themes in the Old and New Testaments. The concept is at the heart of the relationship between God and humankind and provides the context for a deep discussion of what it means to be “the people of God.” It underlies the biblical “love God and serve the neighbor.” It also furnishes many avenues to explore as we seek to answer the question, “Having been redeemed, how shall we then live?” Participants are encouraged to bring a Bible to class each week!
During this study, we will discuss together:
  • the meaning and context of covenant in the biblical world and the covenants with Noah and Abraham
  • the covenants at Sinai and with David
  • the prophetic use of covenant by Jeremiah and others and their connection to the Messiah (Micah 6:6; Jeremiah 31:31; Zechariah 7:8-10)
  • living the covenant life -“This cup is the new covenant in my blood…” (Luke 22:20, 1 Cor.11:25); “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27)
  • how covenant connects the question “Having been redeemed, how shall we then live?” with the answer “to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him…” (Romans 12:1)
