But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.” Exodus 4:13
Doubt is an easy emotion to succumb to. This quote comes directly from one of the best success stories in the Bible, where God uses Moses as His figurehead to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt. This is not the first, second, or even third time Moses doubts himself while talking to God. He doubts himself the entire time God is asking him to go back to Egypt. Doubt manifests in so many ways in our lives, and often holds us back, but God will push us to succeed where we need to.
I love watching my dogs think: it lets me see that they have emotions, fears, loves, and everything in between, just like we do. If I open a door only partway, one of my dogs will be afraid to go through, thinking he won’t fit. I know he will, but with no amount of encouragement can I get him to trust me. I imagine God sees that in us from time to time. He loves and knows each one of us and sees what we can do. Sometimes he opens those doors, and we doubt ourselves, and refuse to go through, expecting a more ‘visible sign’.
God, I pray that we see the opportunities you put in front of us, and that we have the courage to go through a door when we fear we may not make it through. Instill in us not self-assurance, but assurance that you will bring us to where we need to be. Amen.
