Year of the Bible Week Two: Exodus
The Exodus story wouldn’t be the Exodus story without God. GOD is the one that this story is about. God is the one the rescues the Israelites and calls them into freedom through their Exodus.
So, who is this God? Are we speaking of a generic god? A god that can be whoever you want god to be? Just, a concept?
No. The God of the Bible has a name. He’s an identified person. God is an actual individual with a name!
God’s name is יהוה (Exodus 3:15).
These four Hebrew letters are referred to as the tetragrammaton (Greek for ‘four letter word’). They are used by God to identify himself to Moses. We could loosely translate these four letters into the English as: YHWH.
About God’s Name
Jewish traditions don’t pronounce God’s name; it is too holy. Instead of speaking the name of God it is custom to substitute the proununciation with an entirely different word. Often, that word is Adonai, My Lord.
There is no adequate translation of God’s name into our human language, let alone English. However, God’s name is communicating these messages:
“I am the one who is”
“I will be what I will be”
“To be present”
“I will be present where I will be present”
“I am the one who causes to be”
This is who our God is. He is who he is. He is present and causes to be.
Jewish traditions also teach us that God’s name, YHWH, is really the sound of breathing. Y-W-W-H is the very Spirit of God giving us life.
Engaging with the Word
For Study this week:
Read Exodus 15. It is the story of Moses being called by God to lead the Exodus of God’s people out of slavery into freedom. Pay special attention to how God reveals himself to Moses.
Key memory verse: Exodus 3:14-15
God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.
Focus on God’s name this week. God is who God is. How can God’s promise of presence, delivered through his name, help you in your days this week?
Take time to breath, intentionally. With every breath think about how God’s Spirit is giving you life.
Make God’s name Y (breath) H (breath) W (breath) H (breath) your prayer this week.
