This week we have arrived to Harran!
We are in Harran because a significant Bible story takes place here: The Call of Abraham!
Much of the Biblical story, up through Genesis 12, centers in the area of the Mesopotamia. But, when God calls Abraham in Genesis 12, the story will shift from Mesopotamia to the Promised Land (to be known as Israel). Read the beginning of chapter 12 and you will notice that God is calling Abraham to leave Mesopotamia and move to a new land:
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
2 “I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
Abraham was living in Harran when God came to him with this call. Look at this Ariel picture of Harran, you can see the ancient city of Harran (Biblical Harran) in the middle of the city. You can also see the modern city built around it. That mound of dirt in the middle is the ancient ruins. Abraham was here, in Harran when God called him to move to the Promised Land.
You can still see remains of ancient Harran.
Maybe this was Abraham’s house?? Or maybe it wasn’t?? Maybe it was a friend or relative of Abraham! Who knows! But Abraham was certainly here! This is the city his family lived in!
Look up there, on top of the hill, a large grinding stone!
Hey, wait a minute… where is nurse Rita? Oh no! We are missing nurse Rita!
Oh, there she is! Down there by that house!
Let’s go join Rita, she is by the traditional beehive-shaped houses of Harran.
The house are built to raise the heat up and out of the home through the domes. Let’s go inside and look up, you will see what I mean:
When I think about Abraham, I think about his faith. God came to him and called him to leave his familiar lifestyle behind. Abraham was called to leave his home, his land, and his father’s household and go to a new land… in faith.
4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.
We too, are called to live our life by faith. We are called everyday by God to follow him and trust him.
As you walk or exercise this week pray about what God is calling you to do. Perhaps something new? Lift this up in prayer and open your life to God’s calling.
We only have ONE more week left! You have increased our mileage EVERY week! Make this your biggest and best week yet! Let’s end by topping off all our past records!
