In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
This Gospel of John is a precious account of the life of our Lord. How breathtaking are the beginning words! In an unbelievable, simple sentence John moves our minds back across all the time the world has known to that beginning-less beginning when all existing life was God. The book of Genesis begins there too. Genesis begins with God and the start of creation. John begins with Christ, pre-existent and one with God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Christ is the Word who once came to earth to live with us. We know the story of his birth. As he lived, he showed us God. People came to him in illness and despair and he sent them on in health and hope. When he spoke, he pictured a life with God. He was our teacher when we learned to pray.
With Christ our Lord there is no beginning and there is no ending. He lives even now with us and leads people to God. His life, death, and resurrection remind us he lives and reigns with God forever.
Almighty God, help us to see your majesty, to know your love, and to sense your presence in our lives. And may our hearts give you praise and adoration in the way we live and the way we love. In Jesus’ name. Amen
